The drainage specialist Dallmer from Arnsberg is making BIM data on current projects available immediately on the company’s website. This offering for architects and planners is continually being extended. All data is present for ArchiCAD, Revit and in the data exchange format IFC, so that users can select their preferred format out of these. The BIM data can be found on the Dallmer website for the relevant product.

Three letters that have revolutionised the building industry: BIM stands for Building Information Modelling. This represents a new method of building planning, which uses software to bring together all necessary data into a digital, three-dimensional model of the planned building. Important: BIM is not a software per se, but rather an object-oriented modelling strategy that is implemented using BIM-compatible planning and construction software.

At the heart of every BIM project is the virtual representation of every aspect of the object – from the floor plan through to individual sanitaryware objects – throughout the building life cycle. This contains the geometric, functional, building physics and other relevant characteristics of the building and of all components included in it. Simple examples are prices, delivery dates, fire protection properties and data on materials, installation and maintenance. All these data are interlinked, continuously updated and – most decisively – made simultaneously available to all those involved in the project.

Because the whole project is played through on the screen for BIM, before it goes on-site, architects and planners can detect potential problems – such as schedule clashes between different trades – much earlier. Apart from the 3D reproduction of the building, time management, cost calculations, sustainability ratings and management of a building can also be integrated in a BIM project. The most important potential for the future is in the conservation of resources. BIM contributes to reducing material consumption in the construction phase, keeping operating costs within reasonable bounds and increasing the recycling rate at the end of the life cycle.
